Having watched all four episodes of Southland, (Primetime on Demand is pretty nifty) I am glad to see it renewed. I can see it has potential, but there is clearly something not entirely right about the show in its current state. There are times when it seems to want to be The Wire for the networks (middle school-aged gang members playing with a naked woman’s corpse) and other times when it falls about into procedural cliche (said gang members caving to pressure, speaking properly). Similarly, the timeline of episodes often seem a little distorted, and the inability to keep all of the characters in all episodes could be a problem. Large casts can be difficult to manage, sure, but if Lost can do a decent job of it, Southland should have no problem. Hopefully another season can remedy these problems much like Chuck did after its first season, but one must ask the question of where exactly Southland could air on NBC’s schedule considering there will be no 10pm time slots next season with Leno’s move.
