There continues to be this idea, no longer just in Judd Apatow features and bad network sitcoms, but now also in otherwise impressive indies like Lymelife and Gigantic, that plain-looking and aimless guys can work themselves through the romantic traps of far more attractive women simply by virtue of being funny and nice. Are these writers living out personal fantasy on the screen? Don’t they know that no matter how hard they try, nice guys still finish last?
